WOEAIHF is Rick Warren’s “What On Earth Am I Here For?” book.

Day 26: Growing through temptation

Every temptation is an opportunity to do good. Every time you defeat a temptation, you become more like Jesus!

When the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

How temptation works

  • Step 1: Satan identifies a desire inside of you. Beware of shortcuts like you should have it now, it will be exciting, comforting, or make you instantly better.
  • Step 2: Satan tries to get you to doubt what God has said about the sin.
  • Step 3: Satan will deceive you by telling you anything untrue or just half-true.
  • Step 4: What began as an idea gets birthed into behavior.

How to overcome temptation

  • Recognize your pattern of temptation and be prepared for it.
  • Ask God’s help any time, all the time.

Rick said, “I can consider temptation a compliment. Satan does not have to tempt those who are already doing his evil will; they are already his.”

This chapter is very enlightening. It also gives me the room that I can strive to get better every single day that I am given the chance to wake up and live. I can totally relate to the temptations, the steps are real, and now I am better equipped but I would still absolutely need God’s grace and help to overcome my shortcomings.
