WOEAIHF is Rick Warren’s “What On Earth Am I Here For?” book.

Day 31: Understanding your shape

This is my favorite instruction in this book so far. Whenever God gives me an assignment, He always equips me with what I need to accomplish it. This custom combination of capabilities was called SHAPE by Rick.

  1. Unwrapping your SPIRITUAL GIFTS
    • A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church.
    • It is the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
    • No individual receives all the gifts or else that individual will have no need of anyone else, and that would defeat one of God’s purposes – to teach us to love and depend on each other.
    • Have you taken the time to discover your spiritual gifts? An unopened gift is worthless.
  2. Listening to your HEART
    • It’s the bundle of desires, hopes, interests, ambitions, dreams, and affections you have.
    • It represents the source of all your motivations – what you love to do and what you care about most.
    • It tickles your interest. Consider how they might be used for God’s glory. There is a reason that you love to do these things.
    • You do it for the sheer enjoyment. You don’t need rewards or applause or payment, because you love serving in this way.
    • The first telltale sign that you are serving God from your heart is enthusiasm. The second is effectiveness and you get good at it.
  3. Applying your ABILITIES
    • It’s your natural talents you’re born with.
    • Even abilities used to sin are God-given; they are just being misused or abused.
    • What I’m able to do, God wants me to do.
    • God doesn’t waste abilities; he matches our calling and our capabilities.
    • You have dozens, probably hundreds of untapped, unrecognized, and unused abilities that are lying dormant inside you.
  4. Using your PERSONALITY
    • There is no “right” or “wrong” temperament for ministry. We need all kinds of personalities to balance the church and give it flavor.
    • When you are focused to minister in a manner that is “out of character” for your temperament, it creates tension and discomfort, requires extra effort and energy, and produces less than the best results.
  5. Employing your EXPERIENCES
    • God allowed experiences for His purpose of molding you.
    • Examine at least 6 experiences from your past:
      • Family – learned growing up in your family
      • Educational – favorite subjects in school
      • Vocational – jobs you’ve been effective and enjoyed most
      • Spiritual – most meaningful times with God
      • Ministry – how have you served God in the past?
      • Painful – problems or hurts learned from
    • The greatest ministry will most likely come out of your greatest hurt. The Bible says, “He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” What will you do with what you’ve been through? Don’t waste your pain; use it to help others.

Let’s be self-aware as Gary Vaynerchuk teaches. I told my sister that we’re doing this exercise this weekend and I’m pretty excited that she will have an appreciation of her uniqueness and power that serves others and glorifies God.

I do have a  restraint whenever I think about glorifying God. My ego and pride are giving the sense that why do I need to do this for God but a part of me knows that whatever I do to God comes back to me… I will seek the Holy Spirit’s help to break my resistance.
