I have to give David Chappelle enough credit that in his Netflix special called “Dave Chappelle: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The show gave me quite a number of AHAs that makes me appreciate him more not just as a comedian, not the label of he marrying someone from a Filipino descent, but because he’s a decent human being.

He understood when a room needed an inspiration that people remembers. He shared the words of Toni Morrison to SNL people, “This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There’s no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do languages. This is how civilization heal.” I’m a sucker of great wisdoms and this is resonating to my soul.

He is known to be a seeker of knowledge and speaks with truth in an art form. He was significantly raised by his mother Yvonned Reed etching in his mind that he should be a griot – a person in Africa who was in charged with keeping the stories of the village. And most of all, he was taught my his mother with bravery when she utters these words, “Son, sometimes you have to be a lion so you can be the lamb you really are.”

Dave didn’t start easy, he went through different seasons, and the words of Miles David rang true to who he is, “It took me years to learn how to play like myself.” I also learn from emulating adult, looking up to my chosen role models, and then I have to be out to the world being me because only when I show up authentically that I will feel fulfillment.

In Washington, D.C., 27 October 2019, was the first time it was celebrated as “Dave Chappelle Day” and Dave said, “In the future on Dave Chappelle Day, I ask everyone who wishes to celebrate it, to make one incredible memory for themselves, and/or somebody else.” For a man who’s living with spontaneity, that’s really incredible. His friends can attest that he knows how to make fantastic memories because he lives in the moment.
